Banana flowers are a common ingredient in dishes prepared by people in South Asia and Southeast Asia. They are used raw or steamed along with tasty dips. Banana flowers are also added in soups, curries, and fried foods. They have a similar taste to that of artichoke. Same as the artichoke, you can eat both the fleshy part of the bracts and the heart of the flower.

Vitamin and mineral abundance

Banana flowers are packed with vitamins A, C, and E. they are also rich in potassium and fiber, which makes them an excellent source of essential nutrients.

Diabetes

Oral use of 0.15-0.25 g per every kilogram of body weight of chloroform extracts of these flowers reduces blood sugar within a month. This dose has also increased the hemoglobin in rats, as shown in a study that was published in March, 2000, in the journal “Phytotherapy Research.”

The hypoglycemic effect of these flowers has not been scientifically confirmed yet. Consult your doctor about the dose that works best for you.

Menstrual cycle

Eat one banana flower along with a cup of curd and yoghurt to reduce heavy bleeding, as stated on the website Himalayan Home Remedies.

The combination of cooked banana flower and curd increases the production of progesterone in the body, and reduces the bleeding.

Breast feeding

Breast feeding can be really hard sometimes. Dwindling milk supply is one of the most common issues. Banana flowers stimulate the production of milk, and new mothers can easily feed their babies.

Banana flower curry recipe

Ingredients:

1 banana flower (cut and soaked in water and buttermilk, in order to retain its natural color)1 spring curry leaves3 red chiliesSea salt1 cup organic coconut, grated2 tsp. organic coconut oil½ tsp. mustard seeds

Preparation:

Boil the flower pieces for 7 minutes, and strain.

Add the oil, mustard seeds, red chilies and curry leaves in a pan, and cook everything together.

Add in the flower, turn the heat on low, and cook covered for 5 another 5 minutes.

Season with salt and grated coconut.

Stir well, and serve.
